Wedding ceremonies are full of superstitions and symbolic meanings, but many contemporary weddings skip the more archaic and unusual traditions. In this article, we'll outline some of the older traditions that many brides now skip.
Bride and Groom Can't See One Another Before the Ceremony
In today's weddings, the bride and groom usually do see each other before the ceremony. In fact, many couples have a "first look" photograph taken when the moment finally arrives. Work with your photographer to capture this special moment on film. The first look picture can take some planning, so decide in advance where it will happen and at what time.
Dress Must Be White
White is a traditional color for wedding dresses, but many other colors are also acceptable for brides who like a little variety. In fact, many brides choose a white dress with some accent or flair to make their gown stand out. Embroidered flowers, velvet ribbon and elegant patterns can draw attention and wow the crowd. If you don't like white, no problem! You can pick any color you want. Stick with your theme to ensure your dress matches the rest of the festivities.
You Have Walk Down the Aisle to the "Bridal Chorus"
Wagner's "Bridal Chorus" is the traditional wedding song. That said, you can march down to the aisle with any song that has meaning for you. We recommend you pick a song that has significance in your relationship, or one that really speaks of your personality. Go wild trying to decide!
Must Wear a Veil
Veils once signified chastity and purity, but only in the most conservative circles does the veil still have significance. Many brides now choose a stand-in for the veil, like a crown of flowers, a hat or even a tiara. If you're not interested in wearing something on your hair, feel free to go without. There's no rule that says you must have something adorning your head.
Bridesmaids Are Women, Groomsmen Are Men
Bridesmaids are usually women and groomsmen are usually men. But who says they have to be? If the bride's best friend happens to be a man or the groom's best friend a woman, it's a shame to cut them out of the ceremony just because they don't meet the normal gender standards. Work together to come up with a proper suit or dress that will match the clothes in the rest of the wedding party. For example, a female "best man" may not wear a suit like the other groomsmen, but she can certainly wear a dress of a matching color.
