Whether you're making DIY invites or hiring a professional, it can be challenging to make wedding invitations that are legible, creative and attractive. These tips will help you make wedding invitations that are beautiful as well as functional.
Consider Readability
Whether your invitations are colorful and edgy or soft and tasteful, readability is key. Avoid typeface that distorts the letters or makes some letters look like other letters. Choose color combinations that contrast with one another, so your guests will be able to read your invitations easily. Remember, font size is important. Small fonts may look sophisticated, but they can also be hard to read. Before picking a final design, have a trusted relative or friend read your invitations and report back about their legibility.
Proofread, Proofread, Proofread
Proofreading helps you catch errors before they become embarrassing problems. When proofreading your invitations, look for three key problems:
Grammatical errors,
Technical errors (such as incorrect dates or times) and
Awkward wording.
Technical errors you should be able to catch yourself, but grammatical errors and awkward wording can be tricky. If you're not comfortable with your own writing skills, ask for help. Talk to your English major college roommate, or ask a bookworm friend to read your invitations and make changes as needed.
Limit the Text
Busy, wordy invitations can distract from your message. To avoid this problem, cut out all non-essential information and extra words. Remember to include the time, date, location of the ceremony and location of the reception. If you have a specific dress code, or would like to include a "no gifts please" message, include that as well. For extra – but essential – information like directions to the venue and accommodations, include a separate card, or post the information on your wedding website. This might go without saying, but don't put a Mapquest image on your invitation!
Hire a Calligrapher
How's your penmanship? A poorly written address can detract from the beauty of your invitations, and can even prevent your invitations from reaching their intended destinations. To avoid these problems, hire a professional calligrapher to write the addresses on your invitation envelopes. Professional calligraphers usually charge between $2 and $5 per envelope, so provided that your wedding is small, the prices should be reasonable.
Check the Postage
Invitations of a weird shape or size may require extra postage. It would be a shame to send your invitations through the mail and have them come back due to insufficient postage, so check with the post office before sending them to the guests.
